If you're planning a road trip this summer, there are some essential items you must keep in your car at all times. Here's our list of 5 essential items that should be in every car during a road trip.

  1. Food and snacks - There are several advantages packing your own food. First, you save money by buying at your local grocery store over purchasing at expensive highway mini marts. Second, you ensure that if something happens to your car or you get stuck in traffic, there's food to tide you over.

  1. A first aid kit - It doesn't need to be extensive, but should cover all the basics in case you get cut or you hurt yourself on vacation. Make sure it includes essentials like pain relievers, bandages and a larger Ace-type bandage, just in case.

  1. A tire gauge and battery chargers - Again, because you just never know. Even if you don't need these items, you could be a Good Samaritan and help someone who needs them.

  1. A second set of keys. Some people are prone leaving their keys in the car with the doors locked. Even if they have a remote, this can still happen. Save yourself the hassle of a locksmith by bringing along a second set of keys that someone - your friend or family member - keeps on their body so the keys are never in the car.

  1. Comfort items. Pack a favorite blanket and pillow. These are great for comfort during drives (not for the driver, of course) but are also great in the event that your car breaks down or you are stuck in traffic. Bring them into hotel rooms, too, and you can benefit from a little taste of home.

At our car dealerships in Riverside, Ca., we want you to enjoy your car enough that you can't wait to take it on the open road. But we also want you comfortable and safe, so follow this checklist to ensure you are ready when you hit the road.
