Once buyers have determined a segment of vehicles to shop for, fuel economy is often one of the first factors they compare when deciding on which make and model to purchase. In fact, next to safety, gas mileage is often the most important consideration for customers, especially in today's market. The U.S. Department of energy tracks fuel-efficiency statistics and has released a list of the most fuel efficient vehicles in different classes. Here are a few of their choices for 2013, excluding the electric cars:

Scion iQ

While not a hybrid, the Scion iQ is small enough to offer a combined rating for 37 miles per gallon. It comes at a price, however. The iQ makes an excellent city car but does not offer much in the way of cargo space or powerful performance on long trips.

Toyota Prius C

Slightly larger than Scion's compact sedan, but still smaller than the full sized Prius, the Prius C is Toyota's entry-level model hatchback. Its hybrid drivetrain delivers an estimated 50 miles per gallon in a relatively small footprint. Add a relatively low price point and a decently roomy interior to the great fuel economy, and the Prius C represents a solid choice for those looking to buy a hybrid.

Toyota Prius

If nothing less than a full-sized sedan will do, the Prius remains an excellent choice for fuel economy in a hybrid. Less sporty than the Prius C, the full-sized Prius offers real practicality for use every day. A combined rating of 50 miles per gallon paired with the clever lift-back design could offer a lot to a small family or during a comfortable daily commute.

Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI

Finally, for families looking for a bit more room for passengers and cargo, the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI achieves superior fuel economy without sacrificing performance, due to the diesel engine. The TDI drivetrain offers superior torque to the gasoline equivalent.

Anyone looking for great fuel economy has a range of vehicle classes to choose from. When shopping around, it's best to consider which segment fits your lifestyle best, and look for cars that are rated top in fuel efficiency for their classes.
