Did you know your vehicle may have lost its HOV lane privileges? It's true!
- If you purchased your plug-in hybrid vehicle prior to 2017, your decal expired on January 1, 2019.
- If you have a green or white decal from 2017 or 2018, those also expired January 1, 2019, but you may be eligible for a replacement Red CAV decal good through January 1, 2022.
- Purple CAV decals obtained between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 will expire on January 1, 2023.
- Orange CAV decals obtained between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020 will expire on January 1, 2024.
- Blue CAV decals obtained between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021 will expire on January 1, 2025.
- Yellow CAV details obtained in 2022 expires September 30, 2025.
- Green decals obtained in 2022 expires September 30, 2025.
California's Clean Air Vehicle decal program ended September 30, 2025. All electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles must now meet posted occupancy and toll requirements when using HOV or Express lanes. California had passed legislation positioning the state program to continue, but it is contingent upon federal authorization. To date, no such action has been taken by Congress. Battery-Electric Vehicles
EVs are fully electric with no gas engine. Driving range can typically be 150-350+ miles on a full charge and can be charged at home. Most models are compatible with DC fast charging and/or Supercharging, which can add more than 100 miles of range in 30 minutes or less.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
These have both an electric motor and a gas engine. A typical plug-in hybrid can drive 20-80 miles on electric power alone and then switch to gas for a combined range of 600+ miles. Depending on your daily driving habits, you may be able to complete your daily commute entirely on electricity.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles
These vehicles run on compressed hydrogen gas. A chemical reaction generates electricity between hydrogen and oxygen in the fuel cell - no plugging in required. You get the same benefits as other electric vehicles and your only exhaust is water vapor. They can travel 300-400 miles on a full tank and can refuel in 3-5 minutes. There are currently more than 50 hydrogen stations open in California with more planned.
