If you are heading out this summer on a road adventure you might want to rely on your GPS to get you there. That's a great plan, but there are some safety tips you should consider before you head out.

  1. Don't look at it.

If you are using your cell phone's navigation system and it doesn't "speak" directions to you, hand the phone over to your passenger. Always choose a navigation system that will "talk" to you and if you don't have it, let someone else navigate. Looking down at your phone or GPS handheld device is dangerous and could end the road trip before you get anywhere.

  1. Make sure you have service.

You might lose service if you're heading into the desert or the mountains, so don't assume that your GPS will always be useful. If you might be heading to an area is remote enough for you to lose service, consider printing maps before you head out as backup.

  1. Don't trust it completely.

Yes, they are usually right and yes, we know the whole point of GPS is to trust your service to get you where you need to go, but hear us on this: Sometimes they are wrong. The navigation system might send you down a road that's unfinished or onto a highway that is closed for construction. Be willing to make adjustments as necessary.  At Toyota near Corona, we know that road trips are an essential part of summer. And these days, GPS is the map of choice for many. But be careful and heed these tips so you don't get into trouble.
